README.ATM
====================
This README file contains information about using Adobe Type
Manager (ATM) fonts with a WordPerfect PostScript printer driver.
This file also contains troubleshooting information, located near
the bottom of this file, which applies to both WordPerfect and
Windows printer drivers. This information has not yet been
documented in the Reference manual.
Please refer to these files for additional information:
README.LRN: Lists changes and enhancements to the files on the
Graphics/Learning diskette. This file is located in the WPWin
directory (C:\WPWIN).

[Fonts]
[Setup]
[Settings]
[Mono]
[Aliases]
[Synonyms]
This file is located on the ATM disk.
README.WP: Lists changes and enhancements to the WordPerfect for
Windows program. This file is located in the WPWin directory
(C:\WPWIN).
You can use ATM fonts with WordPerfect printer drivers under the
following conditions:
1) You have a PostScript printer or a printer that emulates
PostScript. Non-PostScript laser, ink jet, and dot matrix
printers cannot use ATM fonts using a WordPerfect printer driver
without using a third party software package such as MoreFonts or
PrimeType.
2) The proper WordPerfect PostScript printer driver must be
selected (e.g., PostScript (Additional), Apple LaserWriter Plus,
NEC Silentwriter LC-890, etc.).
Note: All PostScript printer definitions dated later than 7/17/92
will support the Adobe fonts created by WordPerfect. Support for
other PostScript fonts manufactured by Adobe Systems can be found
on one of four PostScript (Additional) printer files. Shareware
fonts, and Type 1 PostScript fonts not manufactured by Adobe
Systems are not available in our PostScript (Additional) printer
files.
To use ATM fonts with WordPerfect printer drivers,
1) Choose Select Printer from the File menu. Confirm that the
WordPerfect radio button is selected, then select the
appropriate PostScript printer driver so it is highlighted
in the list.
If the highlighted printer is not the current printer listed
above the Available Printers list, you may want to select the
printer and re-enter the Select Printer menu. To access other
Adobe PostScript fonts that you may have, you will need to select
a PostScript (Additional) printer driver. There are four
PostScript (Additional) printer drivers. The one you choose will
depend on the fonts you wish to access.
2) Choose Setup.
3) Type the correct path for downloadable fonts. Typically,
this directory will be C:\PSFONTS or the directory where the
PostScript Outline fonts (*.PFB) are located. The files with a
.PFB extension that come with ATM are regular PostScript soft
fonts.
4) Choose Cartridges/Fonts.
5) Mark the soft fonts you want to use. See Printer: Cartridges
and Fonts in Reference for complete information.
6) Choose Close, then OK, then Close, to exit to the document
window.
7) To confirm that the fonts have been added to your font list,
select Font from the Font menu to see the list of available
fonts. You can now use the ATM fonts you marked in your
documents.
Troubleshooting suggestions:
PROBLEM: The ATM fonts display differently in Print Preview.
SUGGESTION: WPWin uses the WP.DRS file to display text
characters in the Print Preview window. Thus, third party fonts
will not match the fonts displayed in the Print Preview window
unless there is a matching font in the WP.DRS file. With the
basic WP.DRS file, WordPerfect can display Times Roman,
Helvetica, and Courier fonts. Your ATM fonts will print
correctly although they may not look correct in Print Preview.
PROBLEM: The ATM fonts are not available for me to select in
WPWin.
SUGGESTION: Choose Select Printer from the File menu to make sure
you have a Windows printer definition selected. Then, choose
Update to update the printer information for WPWin. Once
updating has finished, choose Initial Font. If the ATM fonts
still do not appear in the list, see if the same problem exists
in another Windows application.
PROBLEM: The ATM fonts do not appear in WPWin or other Windows
applications.
SUGGESTION: Check to see if the ATM program is active. To do
this, enter the ATM Control Panel in the Main group. The radio
button "On" should be selected.
SUGGESTION: Check to see if the fonts are installed and appear
on the font list in the ATM Control Panel. If they do not
appear, it may be necessary to re-install the fonts through Add
in the ATM Control Panel (see your ATM manual for more
information).
SUGGESTION: If you have recently changed the printer port in the
Windows Control Panel, it may be necessary to add the fonts again
from the ATM Control Panel.
SUGGESTION: If you are using Windows 3.1, choose the Windows
Control Panel, Fonts, then TrueType. Unmark the option "Show
only TrueType fonts in Applications." Choose OK, then Close the
Font window and the Control Panel. Re-enter WPWin, choose Select
Printer from the File menu, then choose Update. Once updating is
complete, choose Initial Font to see a list of the available ATM
fonts.
PROBLEM: ATM font names are appearing twice in the WPWin Font
list after installing Adobe Type Manager (versions 1.0 & higher).
SUGGESTION: Other Windows applications that use Windows
drivers, such as Microsoft Write, will have a font named "Helv"
(a Windows bit-mapped font) and another named "Helvetica" (an ATM
font). In WPWin, there will be two fonts with the name
"Helvetica." Helvetica is used as an example, but the problem
occurs with Times, Times Bold, Times Italic and possibly other
ATM fonts.
To correct this problem, delete the duplicated form of the font
under the [Aliases] section of the ATM.INI file.
Once the changes are made to the ATM.INI file, exit Windows,
restart Windows, then run WPWin. Use the Select Printer dialog
box to update the printer information.
PROBLEM: "ATM fonts and PostScript printer fonts don't match on
xxx" (xxx indicates the name of the font).
SUGGESTION: Make sure that the PostScript printer is active in
the Windows Control Panel. Also, if you have changed the port for
the PostScript printer since you installed ATM fonts, you may
have to install the fonts again from the ATM Control Panel.
PROBLEM: Text appears jagged on the screen and/or when printing.
SUGGESTION: Make sure that Windows has been restarted after the
initial ATM installation process.
SUGGESTION: If you are using Windows 3.0, make sure Windows is
running in Standard or 386 Enhanced mode. ATM will not run in
Real mode.
SUGGESTION: Make sure ATM is turned on in the ATM Control Panel.
SUGGESTION: Make sure the printer is set to the highest possible
resolution in the Windows Control Panel.
PROBLEM: The ATM fonts display in WPWin incorrectly, but print
correctly.
SUGGESTION: You may specify the Windows screen font that is
to be used for a specific printer font in WordPerfect 5.2 for
Windows. This is helpful if the screen font displayed in your
WPWin document window varies too much in appearance and/or width
from the font on the printed page.
NOTE: These changes will not affect the appearance of your
printed document. These changes will also not affect WordPerfect
File Manager or Mail for Windows.
To list the font substitutions you want to make:
1) List the printer fonts you have available by selecting Font
from the Font menu in WPWin. Scroll through the list of fonts,
writing down the name of each font that does not display
correctly. Include only the characters up to but not including
the first left parenthesis. For example, Univers (Scalable)
would become Univers. If the font name does not include anything
in parentheses, use the full font name, including any size
information.
2) Once you have listed all the printer fonts that do not display
correctly, you need to choose a screen font for each. With a
Windows printer driver selected, the font list in step one can be
used to choose screen fonts. If you are using a WordPerfect
printer driver, select a Windows printer driver by choosing
Select Printer from the File menu. Choose the radio button for
Windows, then choose Select. Include only the characters up to
but not including the first left parenthesis. For example, Arial
(TT) (Bold) would become Arial.
To modify the WPC.INI file (or WPC_NET.INI file if WPWin is
running on a network):
1) Using Windows Notepad, DOS 5.0 Editor, or any other DOS text
editor, open the WPC.INI file located in your Windows directory.
2) Find the section titled [Printer-Screen Font Subst]. There
may be some default printer font/screen font pairs listed.
Directly beneath the last item under this heading, list each
printer font/screen font pair you wish to add in this format:
<printer font>=<screen font>. Below is an example of what you
might enter. Depending on your installed fonts, your list may
differ.
Univers=Arial
Univers Bold=Arial
Courier 10cpi=Courier New
Courier 12cpi=Courier New
3) Save the WPC.INI file, and restart WPWin.
NOTE: If you are running WPWin on a network, these changes can
be made to the WPC_NET.INI file; however, if identical printer
font entries are found in a user's WPC.INI file, the screen font
entries will override the entries in the WPC_NET.INI. Any unique
printer font entries in the WPC.INI will be used in addition to
the list from the WPC_NET.INI.
